Air India finally coming of age

Air India finally coming of age

Air India, by raising its capital by Rs. 7500 crores will not only perform better but will also save an amount of Rs 1000 crore, which they are paying as an interest to their bankers annually.

DURING NOVEMBER 2011 they have picked up a reasonable good business with an increase of 12.3 % in Aviation Grid while for the same period there has been an increase of 10 % in the number of Passengers carried; good going indeed.

'; } } } if (google_ads[0].bidtype == "CPC") { google_adnum = google_adnum + google_ads.length; } document.write(s); return; } google_ad_client = 'pub-9372192619832074'; google_ad_channel = '9759277419'; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '2'; google_ad_type = 'text'; google_image_size = '728x90'; google_feedback = 'on'; google_skip = google_adnum; // -->

The Air India Management in their Committee Meeting held recently, decided to issue Preferential Shares amounting to Rs 7500 Crores to their Bankers. There are 21 Banks with whom Air India has their official link.

Being a State owned carrier, a formal approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt of India is a must which may take its own time. We know very well how our system works.

Meanwhile Air India Board has appointed a four-member panel to finalize the selection of the Chief Operating Officers for Air India and its low cost subsidiary named Air India Express. The applications are already pouring in and the interviews are likely to take place very?? shortly.

Air India thus by raising its capital by 7500 crores will not only perform better but will also save an amount of Rs 1000 crore which they are paying as interest to their bankers annually.

The Management of the State Bank of India has already taken a lead by processing their requests to the Reserve Bank of India for its occurrence. Probably they want to acquire good percentage of their share in Air India?s total working capital. Indeed a good business step for any Banker.

We wish all the best to the Air India Management to come out with a grand success in the process which they should have thought long ago.

Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul, Twitter War Erupts

Original American Idol Kelly Clarkson made a surprise endorsement in the 2012 Republican presidential race last night, throwing her support behind Ron Paul.

This did not go over well with some fans.

“I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance,” she wrote of the candidate. “If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Ron Paul PictureKelly Clarkson Live

Many of Clarkson’s 925,000 followers took issue with her support for the Texan, citing the alleged racism and homophobia of Paul's old newsletters.

“That’s because you willfully ignoring his voting record, his statements, interviews, newsletters, and policy positions,” one follower Tweeted at her.

“You are obviously living under a rock. I don’t even live in the United States and hear about his stupidity,” Tweeted another fan from abroad.

Clarkson tried to maintain calm, responding:  “I am about progress. Ron Paul is about letting people decide, not the government. I am for this.”

At that point, some came to her defense. “I love you girl,” one fan wrote. “If they dont love you over your political support, they dont love you!”

Clarkson continued to clarify her stance, noting in an extended tweet, “I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent."

"I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights."

"I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country."

"That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he’s my favorite.”

Some may question the wisdom of weighing in on such a topic at all, but to her credit, Clarkson kept her cool and didn’t waver from her stance.

Paul is currently battling Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry for the 2012 Republican nomination.

The Iowa caucuses kick off the primary season January 3.

Venezuelan President Chavez Hints U.S. Could Be Behind Cancers Affecting South American Leaders

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez hinted Friday that the U.S. may be behind several cases of cancer affecting South American leaders, including his own, and called the situation "very strange."

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Chavez, a frequent critic of the U.S., said in a nationally televised speech to the military, "It's very difficult to explain, even with the law of probabilities, what has been happening to some of us in Latin America.

"Would it be so strange that they've invented technology to spread cancer and we won't know about it for 50 years?"

Chavez was diagnosed with cancer last June and has been traveling to Cuba for treatment and chemotherapy.

On Tuesday, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Other South American leaders who have battled the disease are Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Paraguay's Fernando Lugo.

"I'm just sharing my thoughts, but it's very, very, very strange," Chavez said, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. "Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don't know" - a reference to Evo Morales and Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador.

Chavez also said that his close friend, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, had warned him, "Chavez be careful, they've developed technology, be careful with what you eat, they could stick you with a small needle."

Bloomberg Businessweek reported Chavez said he wasn't accusing anyone, "just using my freedoms to reflect and issue comments on very strange events that are hard to explain."

NTT Docomo, Panasonic, Samsung and more team up to take on Qualcomm over cellphone chips

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo just announced it's forming a joint venture with five partners -- Samsung, Panasonic, Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Semiconductor and NEC -- to develop and sell chips for mobile devices. According to the press release the fabless JV will get started once all involved finish hammering out the details and focus on creating LTE-connected products for the global market. NTT Docomo is investing $5.8 million to create a subsidiary, Communication Platform Planning Co., in preparation with one of its executives as CEO. Currently Qualcomm makes the majority of chips found in smartphones, but it appears to have some high-powered competition on the way soon.

New sign of rising power for new North Korean leader's uncle (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korean state TV footage on Sunday showed Jang Song-thaek, the power behind the communist state's throne, wearing a military uniform with the insignia of a general, another sign of his rising influence after the death of Kim Jong-il.

The footage, which state TV said was taken on Saturday, showed Jang at the front of rows of top military officers who accompanied Kim Jong-un, the youngest son of Kim Jong-il and his anointed successor, paying their respects in front of Kim's body.

North Korea announced on Monday Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack on December 17. His body is lying in state in a mausoleum in Pyongyang. He was believed to be 69.

His death sparked fears about succession in the reclusive communist state, which has been ruled by Kim's family since shortly after World War Two.

It also unnerved neighbors Japan and South Korea, as well as Seoul's key ally, the United States, as they wait to see how the succession plays out in the unpredictable hermit state.

Kim Jong-un was hailed by state media on Saturday as "supreme commander" of the North's 1.1 million-strong armed forces, the title held by his father.

While the younger Kim has been described as the "Great Successor," a senior source told Reuters this week Pyongyang will shift from a strongman dictatorship to a coterie of rulers including the military and Jang, Kim Jong-un's uncle.

Kim Jong-un, in his late 20s, has also been called by his official title of vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the North's ruling party.

Jang married the daughter of the country's autocratic founder, Kim Il-sung, in 1972, to join the ruling family.

A Seoul official familiar with North Korea affairs said it was the first time Jang has been shown on state TV wearing a military uniform. His appearance was interpreted as meaning he has secured a key role in the North's powerful military, which has pledged its allegiance to Kim Jong-un.

POWER BEHIND THE THRONE

Sources with close ties to North Korea and China have said Jang is the real power behind Pyongyang's succession process.

North Korea's state media have geared up their propaganda machine since Saturday in an apparent bid to smooth the untested Kim Jong-un's succession and show his grip on the military, which is trying to develop a nuclear arsenal.

The Japanese government will hold consultations with the governments of prefectures along the coast of the Sea of Japan to seek their support in accommodating North Koreans in case of a possible flood of refugees, Kyodo News said on Saturday.

Japan has already picked several public facilities in prefectures such as Niigata, Ishikawa and Fukuoka to serve as temporary shelters for North Korean refugees, Kyodo said, but the government needs to expand the list.

Experts say Tokyo has made contingency plans for possibly tens of thousands of refugees arriving at its ports but has not obtained local agreement to the plans, a potential headache.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda instructed government officials on Monday to make preparations for all possible contingencies. Noda is due to arrive in Beijing later on Sunday for talks with Chinese leaders, with North Korea expected to be high on the agenda.

China has been the North's major backer during decades of isolation and Noda will meet President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao during a two-day trip. They are expected to agree to work together TO maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.

The two Koreas are still technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a ceasefire rather than an armistice.

(AP) ? Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson doesn't expect Pittsburgh's James Harrison to suddenly get soft ? or stop bending the rules.

Although Harrison had to sit out one game for his illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy, who is still bothered by concussion symptoms two weeks after the head-jarring shot, Jackson believes the Steelers' heat-seeking linebacker will continue to level anyone in his path.

"Harrison is who he is and whether you fine him, you suspend him, he's not going to change," Jackson said Thursday. "That's up to the commissioner to handle it the best way he knows how."

Jackson's comments came one day after an unapologetic Harrison defended his head shot on McCoy, who has not been medically cleared to practice and will miss his second straight game Saturday in Baltimore. Harrison also said the NFL should punish the Browns for allowing McCoy to return to the game so quickly.

Jackson was stunned by Harrison's comments.

"I didn't hear that. Oh, goodness," Jackson said. "It doesn't surprise me coming from Harrison. He's one of the guys that he's going to live and die by the way he plays. I don't know what to say to it really. You hate to see guys get injured when you hit 'em. I know it's a physical game, a fast, contact game. When a guy gets hurt, all bets are off. You want that guy to be OK. For him to say something like that, I got no comment for it. I'm going to leave that one alone."

McCoy, the Browns and the NFL, for that matter, are still shaking off the effects from Harrison's hit.

On Wednesday, the league announced a new policy that will require teams to have a certified athletic trainer in the press box to monitor play and help medical staffs evaluate injured players. The change was prompted by the Browns' treatment of McCoy, who was not checked for a concussion during the game and was sent back in after sitting out just two plays.

The in-game policy shift preceded former Browns running back Jamal Lewis and other retired players suing the league over brain injuries they claim have left them struggling with medical problems years after their playing days ended.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur has spent most of the past two weeks addressing McCoy's touchy situation. The second-year QB has been coming to work every day, getting checked by Cleveland's doctors and participating in team meetings before being sent home.

Shurmur was asked if the 25-year-old has been advised not to play again this season.

"Not to my knowledge, no," Shurmur said. "He's like any player who is fighting back from injury."

If McCoy is cleared to play in Cleveland's season finale, he'll be facing Harrison and the Steelers, who will visit the Browns on Jan. 1.

Last season, after Harrison knocked out Browns wide receivers Mohamed Massaquoi and Josh Cribbs with concussions, Cleveland center Alex Mack accused the linebacker of "being cheap, being dirty." Mack wouldn't go that far after Harrison's hit on McCoy, and even said Harrison had cleaned up his game.

"He's improved," Mack said. "We really weren't watching for it. I didn't know it happened in the game, so it wasn't apparent to me that anything malicious was going on."

Mack, though, said Harrison's aggressiveness is pushing the boundaries of legality. When Harrison was suspended, the league said it was because he has had five illegal hits to quarterbacks in the past three years.

Mack believed Harrison could have avoided hitting McCoy so high.

"I'd say he's playing on the very edge of the rules," he said. "You don't have to use your head. You could shove him really hard in the chest and get the job done the same way. But there's something to be said about affecting the quarterback."

Shurmur would not comment on Harrison's claim the Browns should be disciplined for their handling of McCoy's concussion. The first-year coach was also asked if he was troubled that Harrison did not seem to be getting the message that his hits won't be tolerated.

"He plays for the Steelers, I would probably comment if it were a Browns player," Shurmur said. "You see and hear a lot of things and I think it's important that we all play hard, we play physical and we try to teach our guys to play hard, play physical and play by the rules.

"At times, we're all being educated as to what the rules are. The underlying deal is safety and we've gone through that here the last couple weeks. As coaches, we are all for players' safety."

Notes: The Browns placed safety T.J. Ward on injured reserve with a sprained foot. Ward started eight games in his second NFL season. He was injured on Dec. 6 at Houston and the team was confident he would get back. Shurmur said Ward, who had 38 tackles, will not need surgery. ... CB Joe Haden (thigh) and WR Massaquoi (foot) returned to practice and are expected to play against the Ravens. ... WR Jordan Norwood will also miss Saturday's game with a concussion sustained last week in Arizona. WR Rod Windsor was signed off the practice squad.

Rare Galaxy from 'Dawn of Time' Photographed (SPACE.com)

An ancient galaxy that formed just after the birth of the universe has been photographed by telescopes on Earth and in space, and is the brightest galaxy ever seen at such remote distances, astronomers say.

The blob-shaped galaxy, called GN-108036, is about 12.9 billion light-years away and appears as it existed just 750 million years after the universe began. The universe, for comparison, is about 13.7 billion years old.

But the sheer distance to the galaxy isn't the only thing to intrigue scientists. The galaxy is also creating stars at a furious pace, making it a rare cosmic find. NASA officials described the galaxy as shining from the "dawn of time," with star formation inside it occurring at a "shockingly high rate."

A?photo of the rare galaxy released by NASA shows the object as a red blob surrounded by other bright galaxies.

"The discovery is surprising because previous surveys had not found galaxies this bright so early in the history of the universe," said Mark Dickinson of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Ariz., in a statement announcing the find on Wednesday (Dec. 21). "Perhaps those surveys were just too small to find galaxies like GN-108036. It may be a special, rare object that we just happened to catch during an extreme burst of star formation."

An international team of astronomers discovered galaxy GN-108036. It was initially spotted by Japan's Subaru telescope atop the volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and its ultra-far distance was confirmed using the Keck Observatory, also on Mauna Kea. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and infrared Spitzer Space Telescope were then used to take better images of the galaxy. The research is detailed in the Astrophysics Journal.

"We checked our results on three different occasions over two years, and each time confirmed the previous measurement," said study leader Yoshiaki Ono of the University of Tokyo.

Galaxies forming within the first few hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang were much smaller than the ones astronomers see in later periods because they had not yet built up most of their bulk. So seeing a galaxy like GN-108036, which is small yet exceptionally bright and teeming with star formation, came as a shock. [The Universe to Now in 10 Easy Steps]

"We had never seen such a vigorously star-forming galaxy at a comparable distance until the discovery of GN-108036," Ono said.

Astronomers measure the distance to objects in space by measuring how much their light is stretched toward the red end of the light spectrum, a factor known as "redshift." The greater an object's redshift, the older and farther away it is, NASA officials explained.

GN-108036 has a staggering redshift of 7.2, one of the few objects known with a redshift larger than 7. Just two other objects have been confirmed to be older and more distant than GN-108036, NASA officials said.

The newfound galaxy is so ancient that it and others like it may have played a role in the transition from the so-called "dark ages" of the universe ? a period before the first stars formed when a thick hydrogen fog permeated the cosmos ? into the universe we see today. ?

"This was therefore a likely ancestor of massive and evolved galaxies seen today," said Bahram Mobasher, a team member from the University of California, Riverside.

Insurance House commences operations in Sharjah | Insurance ...

IH inaugurated its Sharjah branch after the successful launch of its Dubai branch earlier last month, which is already receiving a very satisfying response by its customers.

Mohammed Alqubaisi, Chairman of Insurance House said, "Our decision to open a branch of Insurance House in Sharjah reflects our commitment to serve the entire UAE population in a befitting manner. The newly opened branch will meet the growing demand of insurance products in this Emirate, and provide its customers with the most innovative and tailored insurance products to ensure ultimate satisfaction."

Within a very short span of time since its inception, IH has established itself as an aggressive player in the UAE insurance growing market with its customer-oriented philosophy and wide range of products that include Motor Insurance, Health Insurance, Personal Insurance and many more.

Insurance House has been receiving an overwhelming response by both individuals and groups for its excellent service and tailored products.

"IH has lived with its belief of being a customer oriented organization since its inception and it has not compromised its values in any situation," Alqubaisi added.

"Our undiluted commitment to these strong values has helped us win the trust of customers, who overwhelmingly demanded a branch of Insurance House in Sharjah," the Chairman noted.

Elaborating on the expansion plan of Insurance House, Mohammed Othman, General Manager, said, "The UAE`s strong and resilient economy has boosted the local insurance market significantly, and Insurance House is also keeping a pace with this growth. The feedback we have received so far from our valuable customers and their overwhelming demand since the launch of IH holds us accountable to constantly aspire to be the ultimate insurance providers."

"We are committed to always providing best-in-class services and developing our portfolio of products to cater to the widest spectrum of clients. We promise to open more branches in 2012," Othman concluded.

The driving force behind the success of IH operations and such fast expansion into the UAE, is the company's commitment to strong and well planned strategies, focus on minimizing costs and expenses, customer-centric philosophy, and delivery of comprehensive services to reinforce competition in the UAE market. Those factors serve as the cornerstones of IH`s guiding principles.

Being part of FH group, Insurance House enjoys a competitive edge over other players in the sector. Tool detects patterns hidden in vast data sets

Friday, December 16, 2011

Researchers from Harvard University and the Broad Institute have developed a tool that can tackle large data sets in a way that no other software program can. Part of a suite of statistical tools called MINE, it can tease out multiple patterns hidden in health information from around the globe, statistics amassed from a season of major league baseball, data on the changing bacterial landscape of the gut, and much more. The researchers report their findings in a paper appearing in the December 16 issue of the journal Science.

From Facebook to physics to the global economy, the world is filled with data sets that could take a person hundreds of years to analyze by eye. Sophisticated computer programs can search these data sets with great speed, but fall short when researchers attempt to even-handedly detect different kinds of patterns in large data collections.

"There are massive data sets that we want to explore, and within them, there may be many relationships that we want to understand," said Broad Institute associate member Pardis Sabeti, senior author of the paper and an assistant professor at the Center for Systems Biology at Harvard University. "The human eye is the best way to find these relationships, but these data sets are so vast that we can't do that. This toolkit gives us a way of mining the data to look for relationships."

The researchers tested their analytical toolkit on several large data sets, including one provided by Harvard colleague Peter Turnbaugh who is interested in the trillions of microorganisms that live in the gut. Working with Turnbaugh, the research team harnessed MINE to make more than 22 million comparisons and narrowed in on a few hundred patterns of interest that had not been observed before.

"The goal of this statistic is to take data with a lot of different dimensions and many possible correlations and pick out the top ones," said Michael Mitzenmacher, a senior author of the paper and professor of computer science at Harvard University. "We view this as an exploration tool ? it can find patterns and rank them in an equitable way."

One of the tool's greatest strengths is that it can detect a wide range of patterns and characterize them according to a number of different parameters a researcher might be interested in. Other statistical tools work well for searching for a specific pattern in a large data set, but cannot score and compare different kinds of possible relationships. MINE, which stands for Maximal Information-based Nonparametric Exploration, is able to analyze a broad spectrum of patterns.

"Standard methods will see one pattern as signal and others as noise," said David Reshef, a co-first author of the paper who is currently a graduate student in the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program and also worked on this project as a graduate student in the department of statistics at the University of Oxford. "There can potentially be a variety of different types of relationships in a given data set. What's exciting about our method is that it looks for any type of clear structure within the data, attempting to find all of them."

Not only does MINE attempt to identify any pattern within the data, but it also attempts to do so with an eye toward capturing different types of patterns equally well. "This ability to search for patterns in an equitable way offers tremendous exploratory potential in terms of searching for patterns without having to know ahead of time what to search for," said David Reshef.

MINE is especially powerful in exploring data sets with relationships that may harbor more than one important pattern. As a proof of concept, the researchers applied MINE to social, economic, health, and political data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners. When they compared the relationship between household income and female obesity, they found two contrasting trends in the data. Many countries follow a parabolic rate, with obesity rates rising with income but peaking and tapering off after income reaches a certain level. But in the Pacific Islands, where female obesity is a sign of status, countries follow a steep trend, with the rate of obesity climbing as income increases.

"Many data sets will contain these types of complicated relationships that are guided by multiple drivers," said Sabeti. MINE is able to identify these. "This greatly extends our capability to find interesting relationships in data."

Researchers can use MINE to generate new ideas and connections that no one has thought to look for before.

"Our tool is a hypothesis generator," said Yakir Reshef, a co-first author of the paper and a graduate student in the Weizmann Institute of Science. "The standard paradigm is hypothesis-driven science, where you come up with a hypothesis based on your personal observations. But by exploring the data, you get ideas for hypotheses that would never have occurred to you otherwise."

In addition to testing the ability of the suite of tools to detect patterns in biological and health data, the researchers examined data collected from the 2008 baseball season.

"One question that we thought would be particularly interesting would be to see what things were most strongly associated with salary," said David Reshef. The researchers generated a list of relationships, finding that the strongest associations with salary were hits, total bases, and an aggregate statistic that reflects how many runs a player generated for a team. "Given the stakes, baseball is so well documented. We're curious to see what can be done in this realm with tools like MINE."

Researchers from many different fields, including systems biology, computer science, statistics, and mathematics, all contributed to this project. "People are getting better at combining data from different sources, and in some ways, this project is in the spirit of that," said Yakir Reshef. "The project brought together authors from many disciplines. It symbolizes the kind of collaborations that we hope people will use this for in the future."

Scientists endorse driver cell phone proposal

By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

?

?

Medical scientists strongly endorsed the National Transportation Safety Board's recommendation Tuesday to ban nearly all use of cellphones and other portable electronics by drivers, saying the gizmos are just too distracting for the limited multitasking power of the human brain.

"I wholeheartedly support a ban on personal electronic devices, which provide an unprecedented degree of distraction that's very dangerous," said Dr. Lisandro Irizarry, chairman of the emergency department at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York.

The National Transportation Safety Board wants all 50 states to ban personal electronic devices for drivers. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

"Everyone from teenagers to senior citizens is texting," he said in an email to msnbc.com. "It's very easy to get distracted, especially when driving, and end up in the ER."

The NTSB's recommendation specifically said so-called hands-free devices, like Bluetooth headsets, don't solve the problem and should be part of the ban.?

US calls for ban on in-car phone use ... even with Bluetooth

That sounds great to Dr. Marcel Just, director of the Center for Cognitive Brain Imaging at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, a neuroscientist who has studied how using cellphones impairs driving ability.

"Use of cellphones while driving ? handheld or not ? is really a hazard, a threat to public safety," Just told msnbc.com. "It costs lives."

The problem is that people think they're better drivers than they really are, and so they believe they can multi-task behind the wheel.?

"When you're driving, it feels kind of automatic, so it feels like you're not doing anything, but it's not true," Just said.?"Various parts of your brain are working on scanning the road ahead, maintaining your speed, maintaining your lane ? all of those things are being done even when it feels like it's not.

Obviously, we can do two things at the same time," he said. "But the critical point is we can't do them as well at the same time."
Processing a conversation with another person consumes 37 percent of the energy that's normally allocated to driving, Just's research indicates. That's "a very, very large percentage that has serious consequences for safety," he said.

While carrying on a conversation in person with a passenger is distracting, "typically there isn't quite as much a social onus on continuing the conversation," he said.

In other words, a passenger who's in the car with you knows enough to shut up if you encounter a hazard on the road. But "with a person on the other end of a cellphone, they don't know to stop talking if something happens," he said.?

While he hasn't quantified the difference, Just said, he's convinced "it's worse with a cellphone."
